The Equipment Trap: Why Your Gear Won’t Save Your Score

We see it every month: a newcomer arrives with a €3,000 custom pistol, three red dots, and the latest tactical belt, only to be outshot by a veteran with a stock Glock 17 and a beat-up leather holster. In IDPA, equipment is a tool, but your nervous system is the engine.
Our club statistics show that 90% of match failures aren’t mechanical; they are human. Stoppages, missed targets, and slow transitions happen because the shooter hasn’t mastered the fundamentals. We move 15 tons of lead a year to ensure our hands are the most expensive part of our setup.
Tips & Tricks for Gear Management:
- Consistency is King: Use the same holster and belt for training that you use for matches. Changing your gear “just for the competition” destroys your muscle memory.
- Magazine Maintenance: Your magazines are the weakest link. If you drop them in the sand during a reload, clean them! 50% of malfunctions in matches are caused by dirty or worn-out magazine springs.
- The “Visual Reset”: Don’t wait to see the hole in the paper. Learn to track your front sight (or red dot) as it recoils. If you’re waiting to “verify” your hit, you’re losing 0.3 seconds per shot.
- Keep it Real: IDPA is about concealed carry. If you can’t comfortably wear your setup all day at the mall, it’s not a true IDPA setup. Practice in the clothes you actually wear.
